TV viewers are getting smarter over the years. They demand more from networks and the creative teams behind various shows. We’re no longer passive audiences who settle for mediocre storylines and ridiculous scenes that drag on for days. We are more proactive and know when to ditch a crappy show when it’s insulting our intelligence as viewers.
The growing number of avid viewers of TV shows that challenge the norms (Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Orphan Black, etc.) is a good indication that local TV audiences are craving for shows that stimulate the mind and not just satiate our cravings for celebrities. More and more people are appreciating shows that actually have interesting plots and character development.
While most of the awesome and ground-breaking shows are mostly from abroad, there are several notable local series. It’s great that local productions are veering away from typical soaps that all revolve around missing babies and fantaseryes. One of the highly anticipated shows is the collaboration between advertising agency Ace Saatchi & Saatchi, Unitel, and TV5, Jasmine.
Jasmine is a first of its kind in Philippine TV because it’s a cross between the conventional scripted series and reality show. The show’s catchphrase, “reality and fiction are blurred” is interesting in itself. You’ll be left to wonder how the creative team was able to pull it off. This love mystery drama features one of the brightest upcoming stars in this generation, Jasmine Curtis Smith.
Smith plays a surreal version of herself–an indie actress trying to make it big in the mainstream industry. She deals with rivalries and pressure to win awards while going through failed relationships. On top of these, she has to deal with an obsessed fan called Maskara.
This mystery thriller is definitely something to look forward to because there’s no one like it in prime time TV. Jasmine is directed by Mark Meily and produced by Unitel and Ace Saatchi & Saatchi. Co-stars include Vin Abrenica, Alwyn Uytingco, Gerard Sison, Matt Padilla, Carlo Orosa, Cai Cortez, Marvelous Alejo, Justine Pena, Nicole Estrada, Jelson Bay, and Meyanne Plamenio. You can also expect to catch some of TV5’s biggest stars in cameo appearances during the show’s nine-episode run.
Catch Jasmine this Sunday, June 1 at 9:15 pm only on TV5.
